Electro-Magnetic Field Meters

What are E.M.F.s?

Electricity is of course all around us. Without wanting to give anyone a physics lesson… to transmit electricity you need to turn it into AC (alternating current). When these currents are sent (e.g. through wires and electrical appliances) they produce E.M.F.s (electro- magnetic fields). An EMF meter (e.g. a Gaussmeter) will show an accurate measurement of these fields (including to a low range). As well as supposedly being useful for ghost hunting; these meters are useful for household purposes, especially because high E.M.F.s are linked to cancer.

Why for paranormal research?

If you break down all matter to its tiniest particles you will find that they can all be reduced to electrical charges. This suggests that everything is surrounded and permeated by an electro-magnetic field. Einstein suggested that energy could neither be created nor destroyed. If we took this to a logical conclusion: when a person dies something of their energy must remain and that may just be measurable in terms of an electro- magnetic field which may be given off. It is certainly true that high EMF readings are often picked up at haunted locations and as long as correct base tests are carried out, to rule out natural / electricity causes, then it is certainly interesting. The belief is therefore that some erratic EMFs at such locations may be associated with ghostly activity. However, the exact association is still not substantiated.

What if I get a high reading?

Obviously make notes of exact readings. Compare these to base test results and thoroughly check for any electrical appliances, wires under floorboards, etc. Obviously; electrical devices also generate Electro magnetic fields. Also take plenty of photographs and use any other equipment in your possession at the same area to see if you can find any corroborative anomalies.

Does a high EMF reading prove the existence of ghosts?

An EMF meter is an excellent device because it is not disrupted by human interference and yet does pick up any distinct energy changes and is very easy to use. It easily picks up on all present E.M.F. readings from electrical appliances and other sources. So any further EMF fluctuations may suggest that something else is occurring in a room. It does not categorically show that something supernatural is occurring, but as long as all base tests and checks have been carried out efficiently; it does prove an anomaly is occurring! What the anomaly refers to is more difficult to prove. All we can say is that there is undoubtedly an unseen "earth" around us at all times and while an EMF meter is by no means conclusive proof (there is no device yet invented that can conclusively detect ghosts!) it is one of the closest scientific tools we have to measure EMF anomalies and maybe paranormal activity?
Also some types of EMF meters are notorious for giving some false results so try to get a reliable one!
